The imaginatively named "Eve of Beef Supperclub" at Maze Grill Royal Hospital Road is sure to delight all London aficionados of meat. Fans of fish won't be disappointed either, as the meat is accompanied by a delicious array of sushi. In fact, the full supperclub title is "An Eve of Beef: Big Boy Steaks with Sushi and Grapes". If you're wondering where the grapes come in, they're the selection of wines to complement your meal.
Located in a quiet and classy corner of Chelsea, it's a cosy restaurant and bar spread over two floors.
I had been invited by fellow foodie Mina, who knew my love of great steak! It's part of the Gordon Ramsay stable of restaurants, and I'd certainly enjoyed my lunch at his Heddon Street restaurant. There is actually another Maze Grill in Chelsea, and my taxi driver had taken me to that one first by mistake. Luckily they're a stone's throw from each other and in the meantime Mina savoured a cherry wood smoked Wagyu Manhattan, uniquely topped with a sliver of bacon. When I arrived, we both decided to sample the Brandy Milk punch, a comforting concoction that will warm you up on a cold Winter's night.
It went down a treat with the appetizing platter of starters. We savoured perfectly fresh soft shelled crab maki rolls, smoked short ribs croquette, smoked pork ribs and Jack Daniels BBQ glazed chicken wings. These came with their own little bottle of Jack Daniels barbecue sauce, and were really succulent.
Our starters were accompanied with a fruity white wine, Bien Nacido Cuvée, Qupé 2013 by Robert Lindquist, from the Santa Maria Valley in California. It went really well with the smoky flavour of the ribs and wings, yet didn't overpower the delicate sushi. If you visit Maze Grill with non-meat eaters, rest assured that there's a great choice of sashimi and sushi from their raw counter, as well as tasty salads.
Despite feeling pretty full already, we were impressed by the size of the main course...The USDA prime rib eye on the bone and salt smoked USDA prime brisket bun with pickles were equally tasty and wonderfully tender. No wonder, as the steaks are matured in a special dry ager.
The onion rings were nice and crispy, even though I couldn't manage many of them. There was so much food that we asked for a doggy bag for our other halves to enjoy.
We also tucked into a trio of scrumptious sides - mac and cheese, onion rings and homemade potato salad. To go with our mains, we were served a rich Syrah Qupé 2012, also by Robert Lindquist, from the Central coast of California. Bob and his wife Louisa have a real commitment to biodynamic winemaking, a system devised in the 1920s, treating the vineyard as a living organism.
Our final course was a meltingly good Bourbon drunk Monkey bread, topped with toasted pecan nuts and vanilla ice cream. I'd never tried this before but I highly recommend it!
We washed it down with a subtle but sweet Moscatel Dorado, Cesar Florida from Jerez in Spain.
I'd certainly return with Mr Luxe as the quality was top notch and the atmosphere is so relaxed. There's an upcoming Eve of Beef: Big Boy Steaks Supperclub at their sister restaurant, Maze Grill Park Walk on 19th January 2016. Whilst the menu is a little different from ours, with more sushi and vegetable side dishes, it sounds just as good. The cost is £60 per person, with a £30 unusual wine pairing involving 3 wines from new growing countries or £55 for 3 wines from prestigious, classic wine regions.
Also in January, kids eat free at Maze Grill Royal Hospital Road. Available every day of the week, excluding major holidays and for children up to 12 years of age, for every adult main course ordered.
