Akshay Garud is a dedicated Bioengineering student with a Computer Science minor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), poised to graduate in 2025. He is enrolled at this prestigious institution, known for its comprehensive and challenging programs since its inception in 1867. He has developed a solid foundation in various technical skills, including Java, Python, C++, and other programming languages, along with Atom, R Programming, MATLAB Octave, and Node.js software expertise. His academic proficiency extends to using tools such as Microsoft Excel, Onshape, Autocad, Autodesk Inventor, and Imagej, and he is well-versed in 3D Printing, API Testing, and Data Visualization. His studies also cover essential theoretical concepts like Linear Algebra, Machine Learning, and Statistics.
In addition to his academic endeavors, Akshay has gained substantial practical experience through various internships. He has worked at the Gritton Lab at UIUC, focusing on research investigating mice's neural responses navigating AI-generated mazes. He has also interned at TrussHealth, a healthcare startup leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance patient monitoring, where he was involved in developing web applications and conducting API testing. Furthermore, his stint at Base Pair Inc. allowed him to delve into bioinformatics, where he developed RNA-seq data processing pipelines and engaged in genomic data analysis.
Outside of his rigorous study and professional work, Akshay actively contributes to the UIUC community. He is a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society and MedLaunch, promoting innovation in medical technology. His passion for music is evident as he participates in the UIUC Illini Awaaz A Cappella Team, performing at diverse campus events. He also dedicates time to volunteering with HomeFirst Services of Santa Clara County, aiding people experiencing homelessness, which showcases his commitment to community service. His interests include hiking, basketball, and reading, and he embodies leadership and discipline, highlighted by his status as an Eagle Scout and a first-degree black belt in Taekwondo. Akshay Garud's balanced approach to education, professional development, and community engagement makes him a promising future bioengineering and computer science leader.
