Amy Hannah Johnston, a retired Brigadier General, dedicated over 30 years to the U.S. Army, where she built a legacy of leadership and service. Raised in Edina, MN, and Findlay, OH, she was instilled with strong values of hard work, discipline, and community. These principles guided her throughout her military career, where she held key roles in strategic locations such as Seoul, Korea, and Mons, Belgium. She served with the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command in Korea, and NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).
Amy’s military career spanned various humanitarian and combat operations. She played a key role in Operation Sea Signal, assisting migrants in Guantánamo Bay, and contributed to disaster relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina. She also deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where she led critical military and stabilization efforts. As Chief of Army Public Affairs, she transformed military communications and held senior roles in U.S. Forces Korea and SHAPE.
After the sudden death of her husband, Major General Gary W. Johnston, a decorated Military Intelligence Officer, Amy established the Gary Johnston Leadership Award at Arkansas Tech University in his honor, ensuring his legacy of leadership continues to inspire future generations.
In retirement, Amy remains actively engaged in global and local initiatives.
She serves on the Advisory Council for the Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship at the American University in Bulgaria, advocating for democracy and active citizenship. She also works as a Tree Steward with Tree Fredericksburg, contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
Through volunteering with her therapy dog, Duke, Amy Hannah Johnston continues supporting military veterans and families. Her contributions reflect her unwavering commitment to leadership, service, and community.
