Doug Shows Male • United States of America
Early exposure to high-expectation environments taught Doug Shows that strong judgment is built through repetition, preparation, and accountability. Over the years, his professional path has consistently placed him in situations where decisions matter, and trust must be earned. Rather than relying solely on instinct, he has focused on structure, discipline, and clarity. These principles have guided his work as a nationally recognized college basketball referee and later informed his roles as a Financial Advisor, business owner, and mediator serving individuals and families throughout the Atlanta area for more than twenty years.
Doug began officiating NCAA Division I men’s basketball in 1993. Entering the profession at that level required dedication to learning, adaptability, and a willingness to be evaluated continuously. His consistent performance and preparation led to his first NCAA Tournament assignment in 1998. Over time, he officiated games across the country in major conferences and earned repeated assignments to conference tournaments and postseason play. His experience includes several Final Four and Championship games, as well as international officiating assignments in more than twelve countries. These opportunities were not automatic; they were earned through years of dependable performance and trust built with supervisors overseeing elite competition.
Officiating at this level demands more than familiarity with the rulebook. Doug committed to ongoing physical training to maintain the conditioning necessary to keep pace with elite athletes and fast-moving games. He learned how to manage disagreement calmly, absorb criticism without losing focus, and make decisions quickly with limited information. Veteran officials played an important role in his development, offering guidance that reinforced professionalism, accountability, and preparation as daily standards rather than occasional goals.
Doug also invested time in supporting aspiring officials. He shared practical experience related to preparation, fitness, positioning, and professional conduct. His guidance was direct and realistic, emphasizing discipline and long-term effort rather than shortcuts. He encouraged younger officials to understand the responsibility that comes with advancement and the importance of earning trust through consistent work.
Beyond basketball, Doug carried these same principles into financial services. As a Financial Advisor and business owner, he works with individuals, families, and business owners seeking retirement planning, financial strategy, and long-term protection. His clients value clear communication, straightforward explanations, and efficient service. His work includes retirement planning, life insurance strategies, income protection, accredited-investor alternative investments, financial consulting, and real estate planning and negotiation support.
Doug previously served as Vice President in the Investment and Insurance Division at Heritage First Bank. In that role, he gained experience within a structured financial institution while advising clients on planning and protection strategies. This background strengthened his understanding of institutional finance and complemented his independent advisory work, allowing him to approach client needs from multiple perspectives.
He holds multiple securities and insurance licenses, as well as the Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) designation. This designation reflects specialized training in addressing the financial concerns of older adults, including retirement, tax, and estate planning. Much of his work focuses on helping clients maintain stability and independence as life circumstances change.
Doug earned both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is also certified in General and Domestic Mediation through the Justice Center of Atlanta. As a mediator, he brings a calm and structured presence to emotionally challenging situations, listening carefully and guiding parties toward workable solutions.
Referee Doug Shows represents a professional life defined by steady judgment, long-term accountability, and service. Across officiating, financial advising, and mediation, he continues to apply the same disciplined approach, offering experience-based guidance to those facing important decisions and transitions.
