Dr. Morris Brown, born in 1948 in Anniston, Alabama, has distinguished himself as a physician and a steadfast advocate for community health and justice. Growing up as one of eight children in a family where his mother advanced from sharecropping to nursing and his father combined laboring with Baptist preaching, Dr. Brown was immersed in a culture of perseverance and service from a young age. The civil rights challenges of his youth, notably in a town marked by significant racial strife, shaped his commitment to advocating for equality and health equity.
From the outset of his career, Dr. Brown demonstrated a solid resolve to overcome societal barriers. His early roles in the workforce, where he was among the first African Americans to be employed in service positions in his community, underscored his determination to pave the way for change. This determination was further fueled by his experiences at the medical office where his mother worked, which inspired his decision to pursue a medical career.
Dr. Brown excelled academically, showcasing leadership and academic prowess as he graduated third in his class from Cobb Avenue High School in Anniston and served as class president. He continued his education at Knoxville College in Tennessee, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology. While at Knoxville, he was actively involved in leadership through the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and student government, honing skills that would later define his professional and civic life.
He furthered his education at Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee, one of the historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) known for its medical programs. After graduating in 1974, Dr. Brown entered the United States Air Force Medical Corps, serving as the Director of Aerospace Medicine and providing critical healthcare services to airmen in various locations.
Following his military service, Dr. Morris Brown, Dayton, was integral in the post-tornado reconstruction efforts at Central State University, helping to secure essential funding for rebuilding the community health center. His leadership during this time was pivotal in revitalizing the university and its surrounding community.
After settling in Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Brown completed his residency at Wright State Medical School/Miami Valley Hospital, dedicating over 35 years to serving marginalized communities. His practice grew significantly, focusing on addressing healthcare disparities and providing care to over 10,000 patients.
Since retiring in 2018, Dr. Morris Brown, Ohio, has continued to lead and inspire through his work with the nonprofit “Above the Law,” which focuses on criminal justice reform and providing alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent youth. He also serves as a Certified Medical Legal Consultant and as the Chief Financial Officer of Central Solutions LLC, enhancing strategic approaches in the commercial maintenance sector.
