Dr. Thomas Gratzer is a board-certified psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience in general and forensic psychiatry, primarily serving the Twin Cities, Minnesota. He has worked at several major hospitals, including Regions Hospital, United Hospital, Psych Recovery, and Fairview University Medical Center. He managed a demanding schedule throughout his career, seeing 100 patients weekly and conducting forensic evaluations regularly.

From 1995 to 2002, Dr. Gratzer served as a Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital, where he handled complex cases involving mental health and the law. During this time, he also provided psychiatric care to youth in the Juvenile Detention Center through the Minnesota Department of Corrections from 1999 to 2015. His clinical work extended to United Hospital, where he served as an attending psychiatrist from 1995 to 2016, caring for individuals with severe psychiatric disorders.

In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Gratzer held leadership roles, such as the medical staff president at St. Peter Regional Treatment Center in 1997. He also contributed to academic psychiatry as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he taught from 2002 to 2021. Dr. Gratzer’s teaching experience spans medical students, psychiatry residents, and law students at institutions like the University of Manitoba and Regions Hospital.

Dr. Thomas Gratzer is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law. His work in forensic psychiatry led him to contribute to committees such as the Sex Offender Committee, where he worked on important mental health and legal issues.

His interests also include computer science. In 1991, he won first prize at the Manitoba Science Fair for a computer program and co-authored a book on the TRS-80 computer, which sold 10,000 copies. He also helped develop VP-Info, a programming language for IBM PCs.

Dr. Thomas Gratzer has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals addressing critical topics in forensic psychiatry. Although retired, he supports mental health causes and remains an active donor to his university’s foundation.
