Thomas Gratzer, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than three decades of experience in general and forensic psychiatry across the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Throughout his career, he has worked with leading hospitals and treatment centers, including Regions Hospital, United Hospital, Fairview University Medical Center, and Psych Recovery, where he is soon to return to practice. He remains deeply involved in patient care, conducting roughly 100 patient visits weekly while also completing multiple forensic evaluations.
Dr. Thomas Gratzer built an extensive professional background through several influential roles in psychiatry. He served as Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital from 1995 to 2002 and later worked as a consulting psychiatrist for the Minnesota Department of Corrections. His work focused heavily on incarcerated youth who required specialized mental health treatment. He also spent more than two decades as an attending psychiatrist at United Hospital in St. Paul.
Alongside his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Gratzer made meaningful contributions to psychiatric education and research. From 2002 through 2021, he served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School. During that period, he lectured medical students, psychiatry residents, and law students at several respected institutions in both the United States and Canada, helping train future professionals in mental health care.
Dr. Gratzer has remained active in professional organizations that advance psychiatry and forensic medicine. He is affiliated with the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and the Minnesota Psychiatric Association. His committee work has addressed issues involving psychopharmacology, sex offender treatment, and criminal justice policy. He has also authored several peer-reviewed publications in forensic psychiatry.
His achievements extend beyond medicine into computer science and software development. During his early academic years, he earned first prize at the Manitoba Science Fair for a computer program and participated in Prince Philip’s International Science Fortnight in London. He also co-authored FAST BASIC: Beyond TRS-80 BASIC, a successful computer book that sold thousands of copies. Later, he contributed to the development of VP-Info, a database language for IBM PC systems.
Born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, Dr. Thomas Gratzer comes from a family rooted in education and medicine. He graduated with distinction from Saint John’s Ravenscourt School and later earned his medical degree and psychiatric residency training at the University of Manitoba. He completed a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Center in Chicago. Outside of work, he enjoys tennis, skiing, travel, exercise, and supporting charitable causes connected to higher education.
