Dr. Vincenzo Giordano is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at NHS Lothian Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, Scotland, specializing in aortic surgery. Since 2018, he has served as the Cardiothoracic Lead for the National Service of Complex Aortic Surgery in Scotland, where he contributes his expertise in managing and treating aortic conditions.

Dr. Giordano’s career began in 2011 when he moved to the UK and joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. During his tenure there, he gained experience in complex adult cardiothoracic surgeries and developed his proficiency in managing critically ill patients. He also obtained the Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) course certification. In 2012, he took a position at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a Specialty Doctor. This role allowed him to continue his work in elective and emergency surgeries while pursuing cardiac and aortic surgery research. He actively participated in meetings on mortality and morbidity and multi-disciplinary discussions regarding patient care.

In 2015, Dr. Vincenzo was appointed as a Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Infirmary, where he started performing surgeries independently. By 2017, he had secured a permanent position as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Since then, he has performed over 1900 cardiac and aortic surgeries, averaging over 200 surgeries per year. His practice includes complex procedures such as total arterial myocardial revascularisation, ECMO implantation, aortic valve repair, and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair. He is also an active member of the Scottish National Thoraco-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Complex Aortic Service, which provides specialized care to patients with aortic conditions.

In 2020, Dr. Giordano introduced a port-access technique for aortic valve replacement through a mini right anterior thoracotomy, making his institution the first in Scotland to use this method. He has also been actively involved in the national TAVI program since 2012, helping with surgical access and leading the Quality Improvement Programme in his department, which includes audits and developing new protocols.

Dr. Vincenzo introduced the Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) procedure to Scotland, where over 70 such surgeries were performed. He is also committed to educating future surgeons through workshops and conferences. He is a member of several key professional societies, including the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland.

Dr. Giordano received his medical degree from the University School of Medicine in Brescia, Italy, in 2005. He then completed a residency in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Milano Bicocca. His career includes fellowships at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Medisch Spectrum Twente in the Netherlands, where he honed his skills, particularly in minimally invasive surgery.
