Frank Meza, a respected Physician in Charge at the East Los Angeles Kaiser and a Partner at the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, later became the Chief Medical Officer at Altamed. His career focused on improving healthcare access and expanding educational opportunities for the Latino and Chicano communities. Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, his path was defined by perseverance, determination, and a strong connection to his cultural heritage. Even before completing his medical education, he worked tirelessly to inspire and guide Latinos to pursue careers in medicine and education. Through his involvement in organizations such as the Hippocrates Circle, the Latino Medical Student Association, and MiMentor, he helped many Latinos break into the medical profession.
Dr. Meza’s academic journey was not without obstacles, but he remained committed to becoming a doctor. He attended Cathedral High School, where he excelled academically and athletically, particularly in running. Although he initially struggled with subjects like German, Latin, and Chemistry, his drive to become a physician kept him focused. After transferring to Cal State Northridge, he earned a dual bachelor’s degree in journalism and public health. His perseverance eventually led him to medical school, where he successfully fulfilled his lifelong aspiration.
For nearly five decades, Frank worked relentlessly to reduce healthcare disparities and improve medical access in underserved communities across California. His advocacy efforts contributed significantly to increasing opportunities for Latino physicians. In addition to his work as a physician at Kaiser Hospital, he also served as an instructor at the Los Angeles Kaiser Medical Center, helping to shape the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Meza was born to immigrant parents and grew up in Los Angeles before moving to Frogtown. His mother worked as a garment worker, and his father, who passed away when Frank was very young, worked at a Hollywood restaurant. Raised by his mother, he was instilled with the values of education and physical activity, which led to his passion for running. This passion earned him a college scholarship and remained a guiding force.
Frank earned a B.A. and M.A. in Journalism from California State University at Northridge, a Master of Public Health from UCLA, and a Medical Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis. Later, he became a partner at Southern California Permanente Medical Group, focusing on addressing healthcare disparities and increasing opportunities for Latinos in the medical field.
Meza’s legacy continues to inspire many in the healthcare and education fields. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter, and his influence continues to resonate with those who follow in his footsteps.
