He was one of the first New England television reporters to arrive at the scene following the 9/11 attacks and spent three weeks in New York City reporting on the aftermath. He also provided coverage of the Columbine School Shooting, one of the earliest mass school shootings in the United States, and documented the return of a well-known astronaut to space. These assignments demonstrate his ability to report under pressure while maintaining clarity and factual precision.

Jeff is a freelance investigative reporter for WTNH-TV in New Haven, Connecticut, covering critical stories in the Hartford market. His recent Emmy-nominated piece, “How Technology Is Changing How Emergency Responders React,” explored a real-time video platform three former Yale students developed. The system, which is offered free to municipalities nationwide with optional premium features, is being implemented in Connecticut and has the potential to significantly change how emergency services respond to 9-1-1 calls.
Derderian's work has directly contributed to legislative changes. One of his investigations focused on the murder of a visiting nurse and led to new laws designed to improve safety for nurses and home healthcare workers in Connecticut. He continues to cover stories highlighting public safety, social justice, and government accountability, using thorough research and fact-checking to ensure accuracy.
In addition to his television reporting, Jeff contributes to WTNH-TV’s digital coverage and works closely with the editorial team to produce exclusive content. His recent stories include coverage of a mayor’s public apology and an exclusive report on a local criminal case, which a national outlet later picked up. Before this, he worked with News 12 Connecticut in Norwalk, focusing on investigative and long-form journalism.
Earlier in his career, Derderian served as a reporter and weekend anchor at WHDH-TV in Boston for over six years. He was one of the first journalists from the region to report live from New York City in the hours following 9/11. Before that, he worked at WLNE-TV in Providence, where he led the investigative series “You Paid for It,” which exposed waste and corruption in local government. He also anchored weekend broadcasts and regularly filled in during weekday evening newscasts.
Jeff also spent time on the radio, hosting a live news and interview show in Boston, further expanding his range as a journalist.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Rhode Island College in Providence.
Jeff Derderian is also involved in supporting charitable organizations. He has donated to a Connecticut-based domestic violence initiative. He supports causes such as the Salvation Army, Big Sisters, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Food Bank, and the Tomorrow Fund, which assists families of children undergoing cancer treatment. Outside work, he enjoys running, staying active, and spending time with his dogs. Jeff remains committed to responsible journalism, continuing to tell stories that matter and make a difference in the communities he serves.
