John Chen Hillsborough Male United States of America

John Chen’s professional path has been shaped by steady effort and a consistent focus on building sustainable operations across several industries. His experience includes real estate, finance, technology, hospitality, and private investing, yet the common thread throughout has been discipline and long-term thinking. Rather than pursuing quick gains, he has emphasized careful planning, reliable systems, and accountability. Raised in the Bay Area, he has maintained close personal and professional ties to Northern California, where much of his work continues to take place.

Growing up in Hillsborough, John attended Menlo School in Atherton and graduated in 1990. He later completed his undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, earning a degree in Economics in 1994. His academic background provided a practical framework for understanding capital, incentives, and risk. These concepts later guided his decisions as an entrepreneur and investor. After college, instead of following a conventional corporate route, he chose environments where leadership was accessible, and results were driven by daily execution rather than titles or hierarchy.

In 1999, as the internet began influencing consumer finance, John entered real estate brokerage and founded Infoloan, also known as the Mortgage Superstore, along with Infohome. At the time, online mortgage platforms were still emerging and lacked proven operating models. He focused on combining technology with disciplined sales processes and structured training. Over the years, he hired and trained more than 300 licensed agents and facilitated over $7 billion in closed transactions from 1999 through the present. Infoloan operated in both Silicon Valley and Taiwan, giving him early experience managing teams across different regions. During the dot-com boom, the company ranked #4 on Gomez.com’s list of top online loan agents, reinforcing the importance of scaling through consistency rather than speed.

John’s interest in technology extended beyond mortgage finance. In 2003, he co-founded ImportNow.com, an international online marketplace that connects buyers and suppliers across national borders. As co-founder and CEO, he managed the company through periods of growth while maintaining a strong focus on operational clarity. ImportNow.com received media coverage from CNNfn and publications such as FORTUNE, USA Today, and Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine. This experience highlighted how trust, credibility, and execution must align for digital platforms operating across markets.

From 2005 through 2013, John shifted much of his professional focus to Asia. During this period, he opened, managed, and developed food and beverage businesses in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. He worked across quick-service retail, bar, and full-service restaurant concepts, remaining closely involved in daily operations. These years reinforced the importance of frontline teams and systems that support consistent execution. The experience added practical depth to his leadership approach and strengthened his understanding of operational realities in different cultural and regulatory environments.

Today, John owns Value Growth Properties in Hillsborough, where he develops and provides consulting services for real estate projects and capital financing throughout the Bay Area. He approaches real estate as a long-term operating business rather than a series of transactions. His focus remains on tenant quality, capital structure, and long-term usability. Clients and partners value his ability to communicate clearly with lenders, contractors, and investors, as well as his habit of identifying potential challenges early. Alongside this work, he continues to invest in start-ups in the US and Asia, advising founders on go-to-market strategy, capital discipline, and organizational structure.

John Chen of Hillsborough continues to balance professional responsibility with community involvement and personal discipline. He supports organizations such as Mercury Soul, Menlo School, the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and CuriOdyssey, and serves on the Alumni Board at Menlo School. In May of 2025, he placed third at the Masters Powerlifting Nationals in Reno, reflecting years of preparation and commitment. His broader career demonstrates a belief that meaningful progress is achieved through steady effort, adaptability, and a willingness to stay engaged over time rather than relying on short-term momentum.
