Jose Plehn Dujowich is the CEO, Chief Data Officer, and Founder of BrightQuery (BQ) and BQ AI. With over a decade of collaboration with U.S. statistical agencies, including the IRS, Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Small Business Administration (SBA), he has developed expertise in economics, finance, data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI). His work has spanned areas such as employment, payroll, financial ratings, credit ratings, and industrial organization.
In 2019, Jose Plehn founded BrightQuery to provide in-depth insights into the U.S. economy, including firmographics, financial data, corporate family trees, and legal information. The database encompasses over 100 million legal entities, 70 million organizations, and 150 million employees and business owners, offering a comprehensive view of economic activity. This data is sourced from filings with regulatory bodies such as the IRS, SEC, SBA, and over 80,000 government jurisdictions. BrightQuery’s contributions have become an invaluable resource for understanding and analyzing complex economic trends.
Building on this foundation, Jose Plehn established BQ AI in 2023 to create an advanced intelligence platform for modeling the global economy. The initiative integrates micro-level data about companies and individuals with macro-level insights about industries, regions, and governments. This unique approach connects granular details with broader patterns, offering a holistic perspective on economic systems.
Jose’s research efforts are supported by funding from the National Science Fund (NSF), where he leads multiple AI and data analytics projects. One key project, “AI-Ready Data Products to Facilitate Discovery and Use,” explores ways to create tools that make statistical data more accessible for AI technologies. This research aims to balance the benefits of generative AI with the challenges of ensuring secure and reliable data usage.
Before founding BrightQuery, Jose Plehn co-founded Powerlytics, contributing intellectual property to a platform that analyzes anonymized IRS tax data on U.S. businesses and households. His academic journey includes roles as Faculty and Executive Director at UCLA Anderson School of Management and as an Adjunct Professor at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. While at Berkeley, he founded the Berkeley Charter of Professional Accountancy (BCPA), a leading accounting program. His research, including award-winning work such as “Demand Uncertainty and Cost Behavior,” has been published in numerous academic journals.
Jose Plehn earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago and holds two Bachelor of Science degrees from MIT, one in Management Science focusing on Information Systems and another in Economics with a minor in Mathematics. Born in New York, he spent his early years in Mexico City and Geneva, Switzerland, gaining a global perspective influenced by his father’s work as a senior diplomat for the United Nations. Fluent in English, Spanish, and French, he continues to draw on his multicultural background in his professional endeavors.
Through BrightQuery and BQ AI, Jose Plehn Dujowich remains committed to advancing the fields of data analytics and economic modeling, delivering innovative solutions to understand and improve complex systems.
