Matthew Bissell was born on November 20, 1973, at Oakland Kaiser Hospital. He grew up in the Bay Area with one sister, the son of Peter Bissell, a longshoreman for decades and a proud member of the ILWU, and Nancy Bissell, who owned a local clothing store. Oakland is still home. It is also where, beginning in December 2024, he worked as an In-Home Support Specialist with In Home Support Services, helping clients with meal preparation, exercise routines, and medication management and keeping their relatives up to date on their care.

From October 2023 to December 2024, Matthew worked for Episcopal Community Services in San Francisco as a Water-Based Rehousing Stabilization Specialist. The job took him to Richardson Bay on a twice-weekly schedule to visit people experiencing homelessness who were living on the water. He brought supplies, gave guidance, spoke up for clients' needs, helped them deal with local authorities, and drew on conflict resolution skills to keep their path toward stable housing moving.

In July 2025, Matthew Bissell joined The Broker Group in Richmond, California, as a Financial Consultant. He meets with clients to learn about their circumstances, sets out life insurance and retirement planning options that match, and checks back with them over time so their plans stay current.

Much of Matthew's earlier career was spent on the move. Delivery routes for FedEx and UPS, truck driver training, and gardening and landscaping work were all part of it. He also worked in apparel sales, as a waiter, and as a travel agent, caregiver, and social worker, building the patience and organization that his later roles demanded.

Matthew's education took him south to Claremont, California, where he attended Pitzer College from 1991 to 1995 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He also played football and baseball for Pomona-Pitzer, with First Team All-SCIAC recognition coming in 1994. That year a semester at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, carried him further still, with travel through Spain, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Germany, and the Netherlands. Back in the Bay Area, he pursued additional academic qualifications at Saint Mary's College in Moraga.

Today Matthew is the father of a son and a daughter, and raising them is the accomplishment he holds above all others. He has been head parent for clubs they joined and has volunteered with Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Pitzer College. He keeps up with baseball, basketball, and football through fantasy leagues and a collection of sports cards and memorabilia.

From an Oakland hospital in 1973 to a Richmond office today, Matthew Bissell's story has stayed close to the Bay Area. He continues that work at The Broker Group, helping local families plan for what comes next.
