Chief Miguel Iglesias, a retired Chief of the New York Police Department (NYPD), served for over 30 years, leaving an indelible mark on the department and the city of New York. Born in Panama City, Panama, Miguel immigrated to the United States in the early 1970s and settled in Brooklyn, New York. Driven to make a difference in his community, he joined the NYPD in 1991 and quickly established himself as a dedicated and capable officer.

Miguel’s commitment to public service was evident throughout his career as he rose through the ranks. In 2001, he was promoted to Sergeant, encouraging him to pursue higher education. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management from St. Joseph’s College in 2005 and a Master’s in Human Resources Management from Seton Hall University in 2008. His academic accomplishments, combined with his practical experience, prepared him for greater leadership responsibilities.

By 2010, Miguel had been promoted to Captain, overseeing multiple precincts and working to improve community relations and reduce crime. As Commanding Officer of the 73rd Precinct in 2014, he implemented effective crime-reduction strategies, leading to a 52% reduction in shooting incidents and a 13% overall decrease in crime. 

These results solidified his reputation as a strategic and effective leader.
Miguel continued to take on key roles, including serving in the Brooklyn Narcotics Division and as Commanding Officer of the Intelligence and Analysis Unit. In 2019, he became Executive Officer of the Detective’s Bureau, overseeing complex investigations and ensuring high ethical standards. His leadership in these roles demonstrated his dedication to solving crime while maintaining departmental integrity.

In 2022, Chief Miguel Iglesias NYPD was appointed Chief of Internal Affairs. He ensured accountability within the department, addressed misconduct, and restored public trust. He retired in 2025, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, ethical conduct, and a commitment to serving the public with honor.
