This article was close to being great. The problem is, you have solid advice from somebody like Donna Moritz but then state that it doesn't match your experience so guest blogging is no good. As Donna said, many of the qualitative benefits of guest blogging will not show up on your charts, but those benefits (like being hired to speak at a conference) may very well outweigh something you can count like referral traffic.

Awesome work, Tim. Would you ever consider doing another post like this but using data from folks who don't operate in the marketing/blogging space? I reckon that data would be incredibly valuable.

hey @Ryan, your comment doesn't contradict with my post actually :) Guest blogging is an awesome way to network with other bloggers, hands down! But does it DIRECTLY grow your own blog? nah :)

Contrarian alert Tim! LOL.....I have built a friendship with Zac Johnson, meeting him offline recently, and yep, I did it through guest posting. Branding gold. If you want to go the cold hard stats route, I hear you, but I dig guest blogging to build friendships with pro's, which boosts my brand, which helps me land spots on even higher profile sites and which boosts my cross promotion too. Thanks for the share and have a fab week!

I love this point: So if you want your content to show up on the front page of Google but your own site is too weak – consider writing a guest article for a big and well-known resource..

I tweeted this and wow, this goes against everything that I have been told. Thank you so much.

My rule of thumb for any social media is to only say what I wouldn't mind my grandmother seeing/reading. I believe in the power of social media for good and stating my beliefs. But I never attack anyone, no matter if they're celebrity or a regular person, because it's unprofessional and just plain rude. I'm honest, authentic and real. My followers love that about me. :)

thanks for the comments, guys..

hey Tom, I really suggest you to read the book.. it covers a story, when a "silly" comment happened in real life, but someone heard it and posted to Twitter, and the "real life" guy got in trouble.

I have to use social media for my business, and sometimes I just hate it. Unfortunately too many people think that they are anonymous and don't think before they speak...and mob mentality runs high online.

I try to avoid statements on Twitter that are controversial unless I mean them. I'm willing to take the heat for my beliefs, but I try to express myself without attacking anyone else personally.

People forget how exposed they are on social media and the internet. And that not everyone will get what you intended them too. It's a valuable and painful lesson for everyone that we are no longer limited to the 10 people we (used to only) know. That everyone can have access to what we say, do and think.

Awesome article Tim! Creating Clickable tweets is far more difficult yet efficient than merely adding social sharing buttons! Completely agree with you that 80% of the effort is while writing smart click bait-y quotes while the rest 20% is to add other aspects.
