Matthew Simon Alexander Male

Writing from the perspective of a man from a poor, working-class Northern England setting… Moved to write from the experience of being alive – and all that it brings… Bemused by life in general… Does not blog incessantly…

Matthew Simon Alexander is currently a PhD candidate researching David Foster Wallace’s larger oeuvre for disruptions to stereotypical treatment and usage of gender. Matthew has previously published an experimental novella, The Way of the World, and Elshender: A Tale of a Poor Man, published mid-2013. Elshender is a fictional account of Matthew’s great-great-great grandfather’s life. Elshender was described as “The Modern Rob Roy” by the Edinburgh Advertiser, 13th November 1840.

His next work, due to be published mid/late-2013, is a dystopian work of fiction set in the very near future, and is based in a Western/industrialized setting not too dissimilar from the one that exists in the United States and Western Europe today. Lone Star State (Book One) contains three main narratives that intersect throughout the work, focussing on the experiences of the protagonists within: Robyn, a gender ambiguous street-worker in Austin, Texas, lives life for the moment in an attempt to forget the many and regular traumas of the past; Chip Brewsky and Dale Turdlewand, multi-trillionaire tech-company CEOs, believe that they need to buy a country in order to escape from the clutches of oppressive U.S. tax legislation. However, they both experience things which lead to their own respective epiphanies – forcing them to rethink their plans; and finally, Mia and Alan Pleasure, sadistic, psychotic and highly dangerous drugs barons who operate out of Manchester, UK., and who happen upon a highly addictive new drug that looks set to make them a fortune as contemporary Western society’s obsessive relationship with consumption and the pursuit of pleasure and ‘happiness’ reaches dangerous, and disturbing, new levels.

Lone Star State (Book Two) follows in late 2013/early 2014…

It’s sometimes quite useful to look to the past to help make sense of the present, and those predisposed to optimistic leanings might even say that to do so could help us learn how to do things...

Do any of us still watch sitcoms in the way that we used to (probably a question for the over 40s this one)? The opening to episode 6 of Mr. Robot, “m4ster-s1ave.aes,” gave us an Elliot-esque...
