Philip Skorokhodov is a distinguished academic researcher whose expertise spans history, political science, and international relations. His work primarily focuses on World War II and in-depth studies of Moscow and Paris. Fluent in Russian and French, he also has a robust passion for teaching, having taught at both the high school and college levels.
He was born and grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he attended Manzano Day School and later Albuquerque Academy. As a student, he excelled particularly in History and English, earning numerous commendations. After completing high school, he pursued further education at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, entering the Honors Program and earning a Bachelor's degree in History with a minor in Political Science. His undergraduate thesis, "Who Won the War? Teaching the Young Generation: The Case of France (1946-2008)," explored how the French educational system tackled the complex topic of WWII history.
During his junior year, he studied abroad in Paris, France, through the Internships in Francophone Europe program, deepening his understanding of French culture and politics. His passion for history led him to the University of Chicago, where he pursued a Master of Arts in Social Sciences. His thesis, "The Second World War Debates in Russia (2000-2010): Political and Academic Obsession," delved into the historical and political discourse surrounding the war in modern Russia.
He continued his academic journey at Arizona State University (ASU), where he began his PhD in History, focusing his dissertation on "A Tale of Two Cities: Food, Hunger, and Rationing in Moscow and Paris during WWII." He achieved ABD status, completing all required coursework and exams, though he has yet to defend his dissertation.
His research has taken him worldwide, including extensive periods in Moscow and Paris, where he studied wartime government rationing policies and their societal impacts. He assisted a professor at the Centre d'Histoire, Institut de Sciences Politique in Paris, and helped translate Russian documents for a biography project at the University of New Mexico.
As an educator, he taught history courses at Arizona State University and was an adjunct faculty member at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Arizona. He also briefly taught Russian to K-8 students at the Arizona Academy of Math and Science. Additionally, while in grad school, he worked part-time at the Albuquerque International Association, supporting membership services and organizing events.
Philip's proficiency in languages is evident. He is bilingual in English and Russian, fluent in French, and proficient in Spanish. His travels throughout Europe have further enriched his understanding of various cultures. Outside academia, he enjoys skiing, hiking, biking, swimming, and weightlifting.
