Ramsey Elkholy is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and anthropologist who formed the indietronica collective Monotronic in 2016. He envisioned the group as a shared creative engine where instruments converge into a single expressive force. Guided by a communal mindset, he prioritizes chemistry and collaboration, inviting each musician to contribute ideas and textures that shape a sound rooted in unity rather than individual display.
Elkholy’s academic journey parallels his musical path. He earned a PhD in Anthropology and wrote Being and Becoming: Embodiment and Experience Among the Orang Rimba of Sumatra, a study of rainforest foragers in Indonesia and their relationship to environment and identity. His research into lived experience and collective life informs his songwriting, where rhythm and atmosphere echo cultural connection.
Years of travel broadened his perspective. After backpacking across Asia and other regions for three years, studying Indian music in Calcutta, and conducting two years of fieldwork in Sumatra, he absorbed a sensitivity to layered rhythm and natural sound. Ramsey Elkholy Monotronic has described the rainforest at night as a living symphony. Raised in New York, he now records from a Los Angeles garage studio.
In 2026, Monotronic released Waiting for You, an album that expands the collective’s sonic reach. The record features bassist Mohini Dey on Close Enough and acclaimed drummer Omar Hakim throughout. Several videos, including Looking Away and Everything Moves, premiered at number one on VEVO, reflecting the project’s ability to merge striking visuals with polished production.
The album blends indie rock, pop, and electronic elements into a cohesive and cinematic whole. Everything Moves unfolds within a high-energy escape room setting, while Kettle Song incorporates dynamic choreography and bold imagery. Many tracks were written during time spent in Tulum, where open coastal landscapes shaped the album’s reflective mood.
Since their self-titled debut in 2019, Monotronic has earned praise from outlets such as Rolling Stone and Relix. The rotating collective has included musicians linked to artists across genres. Singles, including Kids of Summer and In Between, gained notable recognition and playlist success, strengthening Elkholy’s reputation for immersive composition and collaborative vision.
