Japanese has a significantly wider disparity between written and spoken language than does English. Classical grammar structures, which are rarely employed in conversation, are frequently used in Japanese writings. There are numerous fixed terms and honorific expressions (Keigo) used in formal letters, despite the fact that writing to close friends is not subject to any particular norms. Formal letters are typically written in a formal tone rather than in conversation.

Closing and Opening Phrases

Like "Dear" and "Sincerely," etc. in English, the opening and ending words of letters appear in pairs.

Haikei () and Keigu ()

the most typical pair used in professional correspondence. Women occasionally substitute "Kashiko()" for "Keigu" as their ending word.

"Zenryaku" and "Sousou"

Less formal is this pair.

It is typically used when you don't have enough time to write a lengthy letter, leaving off the opening salutations. Zenryaku literally translates to "omit the opening statements."
