Robert Beatty Meditation Male • United States of America
Robert Beatty is one of the early Theravada Buddhist teachers who brought Insight Meditation and Mindfulness to the West in the 1970s. His approach to teaching emphasizes meeting students where they are in their journeys, combining Buddhist meditation practices with Western psychotherapy. Over the years, he has helped thousands of individuals integrate mindfulness and meditation into their lives. His teaching style blends traditional Buddhist teachings with humor, music, poetry, and movement, assisting others to approach life’s challenges with an open heart and clear mind.
Throughout his career, Robert has had the privilege of learning from several influential teachers who shaped his understanding and practice of meditation. He studied under a prominent teacher for over four decades and was authorized to teach within the Burmese Buddhist tradition in 1982. Additionally, he explored non-dual spirituality and practiced in Burma, where he took novice ordination. His journey continued in India, where he deepened his practice under the guidance of several influential teachers.
After receiving his BSc in Psychology and Chemistry from McGill University, he traveled the world, living and working in countries like Australia and Switzerland. His life took a significant turn in 1972 when he attended a Buddhist meditation retreat that inspired him to ordain as a monk in India. However, due to health reasons, Robert had to return to Canada, which sparked his interest in blending Western psychotherapy with Buddhist meditation. This would become a central theme in his future work.
Upon returning to Canada, Robert pursued a Master’s in Environmental Studies, focusing on understanding how humans affect the natural world and how people can live more harmoniously with nature. During this time, he also encountered Western psychotherapy, which greatly influenced his approach to integrating it with meditation practices.
In 1979, Robert moved to Portland, Oregon, where he earned his Master of Social Work degree. He worked in addiction treatment and later in hospice care, supporting individuals and families through the challenges of illness and death. In 1980, he founded a meditation group called the Portland Insight Meditation Community. Under his leadership, the community grew and acquired a dedicated space for meditation classes and retreats. In 2024, Robert stepped down from his role to focus on individual teaching and consultations.
Robert is the author of Mindfulness for a Happy Life: New Teachings of an Old Tradition for Today's World. Over his long career, he has helped many individuals overcome emotional and psychological challenges through meditation. His teachings have reached thousands through classes, retreats, and conferences across the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada.
Robert continues to offer individual consultations and teachings in meditation, Buddhist psychology, and emotional well-being. For more information about his work, please visit his website.
