Sefla Fuhrman would pursue a Ph.D. in Urban Studies at the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana. Hurricane Katrina, one of the costliest hurricanes in US history, had a significant impact on her time in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina delayed her Ph.D. completion by a decade, but that did not deter her. She lost all of her material possessions as a result of the natural disaster and had to start over to rebuild her life. Nonetheless, she was committed to demonstrating the resilience of women in nontraditional fields through her Ph.D., and she completed the program successfully. Despite the delays caused by the hurricane, she was able to complete her degree while also assisting those in need.
