The coffee maker you have is used frequently however, it's an appliance that isn't given an effective clean (coffee and water shouldn't cause enough of a mess, do they?) frequently. It's essential to wash your coffee maker not just to ensure the well-being of your machine, but also to improve the flavor of your morning coffee. Coffee build-up can make your coffee taste bitter. Even more importantly, there may be mold or yeast in the reservoir according to this study in 2011 conducted by the National Science Foundation. While mold and yeast in a smaller scale typically do not affect our health in any way, it is possible that they could trigger an allergic reaction in certain.

To make sure your morning cup isn't a mystery You'll need to wash your machine regularly. Carolyn Forte, Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Appliances & Cleaning Product Lab, advises that with just a bit of soap, water and vinegar, you'll be set to go.

If you're wondering how to clean the K-cup maker and you're not sure how, we've got the answer. Follow these cleaning tips for Keurig coffee makers, courtesy of the Good Housekeeping Institute, and keep an eye out for your travel mugs!

How to clean a Coffee Maker

1. Cleanse the parts that are removable with dish soap after each use.

"This is essential because it assists in removing grinds, coffee and even oil left on the floor," says Forte. "You can wash your hands at the sink using soapy water and warm water however, most of the time, the items are dishwasher safe. Make sure to wipe off the exterior and the warming plate, where spills could cause fire." It is also recommended to leave the lid of the reservoir open so it will dry completely following each use!

2. Every month, decalcify your machine by using vinegar.

As time passes the hard water minerals accumulate in your machine's inner workings. As a result, you might observe that your coffee takes longer to pour. To bring things back to good shape, it is necessary to wash and decalcify the machine. Forte's method: old white vinegar, which is known to be reliable.

The reservoir should be filled with equal amounts of vinegar and water and put an empty paper filter in the basket that is empty of. Place the pot on top as well as "brew" this solution to a halfway point. Switch off the machine and allow it to rest for about 30 minutes. After that switch the coffee maker on, continue the brewing process, and then dump the whole container filled with water and vinegar. Then, rinse everything out by putting into a new filter and then brewing a full pot of water that is clean. Repeat this process once.

3. Let your carafe shine again by using rice.

It is recommended to clean your carafe following every use. If it's starting to look dingy then fill it up with warm, sudsy water and sprinkle a few grains of rice. Stir the mixture around to eliminate any dirt. Make use of a scrub sponge to get rid of any debris, and thoroughly rinse.
