If the child had been white with straight mouse brown hair, I think they'd be a similar problem. 'Oh but Annie is a red-head!' I'd like to think that anyway.
Familiarity is comfort and people don't like change. They like their characters to look the same. Jesus Christ has always been pictured as a blue-eyed white guy so to have him 'suddenly' as a dark-eyed Israeli will seem 'not as it's supposed to be'.
I haven't seen the Tweets about Annie tbh, but I do like to see the best in people, and hope it's not a case of race but pure 'don't like change'.
